Jamaica Public Service Reaching 105K Street Light Goal

Jamaica Public Service Reaching 105K Street Light Goal

Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPS) is an integrated electric utility company and the sole distributor of electricity in Jamaica. Undertaking one of the largest projects of its kind in the region, JPS made a plan to convert the island’s 105,000 legacy high pressure sodium streetlights into smart, energy-efficient LED streetlights.

With the help of TerraGo’s StreetlightOps software, JPS is currently in the final phase of the project, and within the next year will convert the final 20k out of 105k target street lights.

Some of the features of StreetlightOps that JPS found the most beneficial were enabled by the seamless integration with the Central Management System (CMS), Itron’s Streetlight Vision (SLV) platform. This integration made it faster and easier to collect streetlight data,  update the CMS and automatically commission the lights on the network. It also enables the field crews to control lights and access data in real-time.

At the beginning of the project, JPS was using a manual data collection system. Someone had to prepare a spreadsheet and go through it to verify all of the data manually, then upload the spreadsheet to SLV once a week. There were no real time updates, which meant that there was no way to share data dynamically between the field crews and back office systems.

Now, with TerraGo StreetlightOps, JPS is able to meet all of its needs in terms of installation and maintenance, as well as managing the field crews’ activities in real-time. JPS has built a strong foundation for smart streetlight and smart utility operations which it looks forward to enhancing and expanding in the future.
