There is no consensus on what defines a smart city, nor is there an exact count of how many exist today. However, it is widely recognized that numerous challenges, spanning technological, operational, financial, regulatory, and political domains, hinder many cities from achieving long-term smart city goals. While tens of thousands of smart city pilots have been launched, a small percentage of programs have moved beyond the “proof of concept” phase to become part of ongoing infrastructure and daily operations.
At TerraGo, we focus on using our cloud-based technology platform to help our customers solve the fundamental obstacle of bridging the gap from legacy systems to future-proof operations. Each city or utility faces a unique journey, complicated by legacy infrastructure, the complexity of new technology and organizational resistance to change. Clinging to the past, you have paper forms, manual procedures and back-office data silos. Looking to the future, you have a complex array of IoT sensors, networks, protocols and proprietary technologies.
TerraGo’s mission is to provide a software foundation that helps cities and utilities overcome these challenges and escape “pilot purgatory”. In our view, city and utility operations need software that can be a single pane of glass for their legacy assets, near-term smart device deployments, and the myriads of multi-vendor devices on their smart city roadmap. Most of our customers start with smart streetlight controls, but they need to manage legacy streetlights too, including dumb photocells. Meanwhile, they also need future-proof support for other devices. Our software is designed to help them work smarter with “dumb assets” while also taking advantage of multi-vendor smart sensors. Today, our customers are also using our platform as the foundation to deploy and manage all types of devices, from smart streetlight controls to electric grid devices to air quality sensors to traffic cameras and EV charging stations and more.
